Bites Nearby: The Limerick Pub

If pub fare is what you seek, The Limerick Pub offers Irish food, drink, and entertainment.

Located on the corner of two short side streets, is perhaps easy to miss for those who are not looking. But fortunately, more than a few locals know where it is and keep coming back for more.

The setting is warm, inviting, and comfortable: dark wood chairs and tables, dim lighting, the game humming on the big screen televisions, always occupied, but not too crowded. It’s easy to understand why Limerick patrons are so loyal.

I’ve been to the Limerick a handful of times now and when a friend suggested we go there for dinner, I readily agreed. The last time I ordered a salad of three uncut, undressed romaine lettuce hearts, covered in a cup of grated cheddar cheese with some tomato slices on the side.

In my humble opinion, this salad lacked the originality and creativity of some of the other Limerick menu items. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the friendly waiting staff, and the fabulous homemade brown bread ice cream. I was also looking forward to checking out the Limerick’s new menu and I am happy to report that all in all, it looks fantastic.

As promised, the Limerick brings the taste of Ireland to Wheaton. You’ll find Guinness Beef Stew, Shepherd’s Pie, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Bangers and Mash, and of course, Fish and Chips. I’ve heard the Irish Reuben is fantastic and the Slow Cooked Pulled Pork sandwich is wonderful. For sandwiches, you can expect to pay at least $7.50 and for regular entrées you can pay up to $22.

For those seeking the Best Value, I recommend the Weekly Specials. My friend ordered the Wednesday special, $5 Limerick Burgers. Although a little more rare than requested, the burger seemed to satisfy.

For vegetarians, such as myself, the new menu offers fewer options.  There’s the Veggie Burger ($7.50), which was not included in the Wednesday special with the other house burger. For those seeking something lighter, there’s the Roasted Vegetable Spread with dipping chips ($7.50), The Limerick House Salad ($5), Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad ($7.50), and Caesar Salad ($7).

There is one vegetarian entrée, the Meatless Loaf priced at $13.50. I decided to go with the more economical Caesar Salad, which was quite humble: iceberg lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese, and a generous amount of Caesar dressing.

Similar to my experience with the romaine salad, I was left feeling a certain palatal and gastrointestinal dissatisfaction. It was one of those “vegetarian dishes” that feels more like a side because it was actually meant to have meat.

I highly recommend the Limerick Pub to you, fans of local and Irish flavor. I recommend the Limerick to you, vegetarians, too. If not for the food, go for the company, the live entertainment, the impressive beer and whiskey menus, and brown-bread ice cream.
