I drive the school bus while I am attending college full time. I am neither overweight or smoke. My bus carries 70 kids ages 4 to 18, no other adult aid riding. When a child achieves honor roll status, is that not because the child has put forth enormous effort to stay focused, learn and achieve much extra credit due to the extra effort given. BAllen you seem to be missing the entire point of opportunity being the precursor to success. The argument that it takes a village to raise a child, or in this case a bus driver goes at the environmental conditions that supported the individual achievement.

As an example if you have three students all of which are of equal ability. All three students live equal distance from school. One has bus access, one has a parent take responsibility for transport and the last one has no access to the school. Fast forward their futures and ask the question who did better in school. We started with three students and the question is only applicable to two. Why because, achievement is tied to opportunity.

As a successful business owner I understand the role I played in my success, the hours of work, the risks to my families future I have borne, however I have the humility to acknowledge the opportunities that I have been presented with over my life.

I know of that factory since my family was involved in the cable industry starting in the late 60s, early 70's. The reason the factory was closed down was the unions demanded more than the fair wage they were receiving for doing that job. Hell I was making $14.79/hour in 1973 at a UAW factory, plus bonus if i had more output. I actually had the shop steward come to me and tell me I was working too hard and that he wuld get my father to talk to me about it. I told him, i would kick his butt just like I kicked the butss of his one brother and a friend of his at the same time. 3 yrs later that factory was closed and moved to a RIGHT TO WORK STATE, SOUTH CAROLINA AND THE COMPANY IS STILL in business. My father lost his job, pension and the union did nothing for the union members except get them a couple dollars a month for 5 yrs.

Lorna, I have worked all my life as well, from 14 years old volunteering at hospitals and not getting paid for it every summer after school.

I've been out there and seen how most businesses love to take advantage of workers today. Bottom line is that without a Union, you are Soylent Green to most business owners, people of no worth who they can use and abuse to their hearts content.

Now, in an economy where you can find a job anywhere and leave an employer that does that at any time and have a reasonable chance of finding a job within 2 weeks, that is okay... the business owners in question who do that will 'have the word get out' and no one will wish to work for them.

In our real world of today where people have to take basically any goddamned job they can get in order to support their families and cannot be leaving and going from job to job on a regular basis? We need some worker protection laws and Unions are a big part of that.

Without the Unions, we wouldn't have paid sick days, paid vacation time, etc. etc. etc.
Which, since none of those things are guaranteed by a Constitutional Amendment.... would be repealed, the laws that they are enshrined in. In fact, on a regular basis, the conservatives try to sneak through laws that would do JUST that.

GOD forbid, should you have to actually work when you get hired by an EMPLOYER (A legal entity that controls and directs a servant or worker under an express or implied contract of employment and pays (or is obligated to pay) him or her salary or wages in compensation.) EMPLOYEE (is a person who works in the service of another person under an express or implied contract of hire, under which the employer has the right to control the details of work performance) YOU don't put up the capital to run the business, YOU don't pay the bills, YOU don't invest in the company, so therefore, the EMPLOYER (or the managers who acts for the owner) can set the rules. If you were smart (which evidently you are NOT) enough to make it into management and invested in the company, you would look to the employees as to do what was necessary for the success of the company. No wonder you had a hard time keeping a job with your pissant attitude.

Lorna, that my friend is what seperates winners (us) from losers (them). I used to mow lawns for a couple bucks in the early 60's. When I was 14 in 1968, I got a job at a gas station near me, worked over 30 hours a week pumping gas, changing tires, scrubbing bathrooms, managing the money for my shift and the owner even had me working by myself at times because he could trust me. I did that and played football in the fall, ran track and played baseball in the spring and summer and STILL got a good Catholic school education. That is when they taught the true meaning on working hard, not like now that these lefties encourage kids to be mediocre at best and to complain and put the blame more on others and to NOT have any accountability or to learn responsibility. UNIONS profess to be worthless to the employer, don't take pride in your work, try to cheat "the man", more pay for less work and ALWAYS have your hand out for more.

It is the problem with the bosses who treat people like trash 99% of the time (my current boss excepted, because he like me was taken advantage of by business owners for many years) and who give us lackluster, if not slave, pay.

Big difference between the people who I worked with and the bosses today, who feel that you should be 'so grateful' that you even have a job with them that they expect ridiculous things from you, such as never taking a sick day, never taking a vacation day, etc.

Business owners today have been spoiled by the current bad economy into thinking that people are going to be happy with being treated like slaves. Sorry, but no.

My work experiences are fine, Lorna. So are my experiences with co-workers. But I have seen way too many bosses that expect you to 'do more' than you signed on for (one boss insisted that we clean the warehouse even though it was not in the job description that I signed up for) and bitched when we refused to do that, telling them "Hey, I didn't sign up to be a janitor. If you would have included 'light cleaning' in the job description, that would have been fine and I would be willing to do that. Might expect a few cents extra in pay per day but not really anything unreasonable."

I'm one of those people who says "Work to job description and do NOTHING that is not in your job description." Why? Because I've heard too many horror stories from relatives and friends where they went out of their way to do something and when something 'broke', they were canned.... even though the boss implicitly told them to do the thing in question.
