Food Truck Delight

Authentic Mexican/Salvadorian fare served up in a parking lot.

Have you heard about the place behind the ? Silver food truck, 10 pictures of plates on its side, and no name? There are usually people waiting for food nearby, and it's really good.

I've walked by this particular truck several times, always on my way to some other neighborhood joint. The smells wafting about are unreal. The truck is owned by Ulizes, who says he has worked at Austin Grill and Jaleo in the past but now runs his own mobile (theoretically, anyway, since it stays in its Laundromat parking lot location) business selling fresh, made-to-order Mexican and Salvadorian specialties.

If you are doing laundry, you must wander over and take in the smells. If you do, you're going to find yourself wanting some, and it will become part of your laundry routine. The tacos and pupusas are that good.

The 10 pictured items range from a combination grilled shrimp, steak and chicken with rice, beans and avocado for $12 to $6 chicken or steak burritos, $6 for three chicken, pork or steak tacos, a chicken and cheese quesadilla for $6, and pork and cheese or plain cheese pupusas for $1.50 each.

The food comes as pictured, on a Styrofoam plate or in a box to go. My constant dining companion and I ordered one pork and cheese and two cheese pupusas ($1.50 each), a chicken and cheese quesadilla ($6), a three-taco plate — two chicken and one steak ($6) — one chicken Torta Mexicanos ($6) and one chicken burrito ($6).

The pupusas are tasty, with a gooey cheese center wrapped in a grilled corn tortilla. The toasted flavors of the corn tortillas stand out. The chicharon pupusa didn't pack as much flavor as I would've liked, but the cheese was wonderful. The pickled veggies served with the pupusas were a nice accompaniment, fresh and tangy.

The tacos were our favorite, hands down. Served in double soft corn tortillas, one retaining the juices of the meat while the other keeps the taco from coming apart. They are overstuffed with grilled meat and are topped with cilantro and onion, and a spicy green salsa and lime wedge. These are tacos worth going back for, especially the steak. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, it works exquisitely with the lime and salsa verde.

The quesadilla was well grilled, with a nice crisp tortilla wrapping a melty cheese, grilled chicken and onion filling, served with avocado, pico de gallo and sour cream. We asked for hot sauce and got a nice punchy smoky chipotle and adobo red sauce.

The burrito is a beast. Ours was chicken, but could have been steak, which is cooked into rice and beans. The other side of the burrito is avocado, lettuce, tomato and sour cream — very good flavor and the right balance of vegetable garnish to chicken, rice and beans.

The Torta Mexicanos, or sandwich, had a generous layer of thinly sliced orange bell pepper, tomato, avocado and lettuce over chicken, onions and cheese. Like the burrito, it was tasty and large.

The truck sells drinks out of a cooler and has a selection of juices and sodas. Food can be eaten at a countertop in front of the truck or taken away.

The food truck residing behind the Wheaton Laundromat on Georgia Avenue is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. A person could eat well for $9, a party of two or three could pig out for $25.
