Manna Food Center Already Looking to Next Year for County's Food Needs

Volunteers needed for MLK Jr. Day event.

Like many giving opportunities around this time of year Manna Food Center is asking for food and money donations, but when December ends, the need doesn't go away.

"The reality is, we do this work year-round," says Kim Damion, executive director.

In January, Manna will need volunteers for a county-wide food drive on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Food drives will be held in each Giant Food Store. They are currently looking for individual volunteers and groups to help with this event. In addition, Manna most needs adult volunteers Monday through Friday, 9 to 3 p.m. Both opportunities can go through the volunteer coordinator, by email or by calling 301-424-1130.

"We have ongoing regular activities, we could always use the extra hands to help sort boxes." Daimon said.

Food donations may be dropped off at their Gaithersburg location  at 9311 Gaither Road. The donation center is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but also has an afterhours drop off box.

In addition, through the end of the year, money donations to Manna can go twice as far. A donor has promised up to $10,000 in matching funds through Dec 31st. To donate to this challenge, online or in check, simply write MANNA BOARD CHALLENGE on the check or in the comments field online.

According to Damion, Manna is just less than half on their way to meeting that challenge, but "it's still early in the month".
