Meeting Roundup: Wheaton Urban District

Urban District Committee honors Natalie Cantor, receives update on B.F. Saul project.

The Wheaton Urban District Committee met last night at the Mid-County Services Center for their June meeting. Here's what was discussed

  • In its official capacity as advisors to the County government, WUDAC is sending two letters, one to County Council President Valerie Ervin in support of further legislation to stop panhandling and one to County Executive Ike Leggett to establish a task force on food truck vendors to reexamine the permitting system for the trucks.
  • The County Council's public hearing on the Sector Plan is scheduled for July 19 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Natalie Cantor, director of the Mid-County Center, will be retiring as of June 30. She praised WUDAC members for engaging with the issues and noted that she will still be active in Wheaton events, although not as a county employee.
  • Pete McGinnity said that the County continues to look at B.F. Saul's proforma statements for the downtown Wheaton project. Through funding from the State Highway Adminstration, they are analyzing the documents, which contain B.F. Saul's estimations of investment needed, returns on that investment and other financials that would lead to the company signing a general development agreement with the County and WMATA. McGinnity said that after negociations, a general development agreement could be signed by mid-fall.
  • The Safeway project has only one permit left to clear: new construction. Patriot Realty, the management company associated with the project, was waiting for the demolition and new construction permits before going ahead with tearing down the old store. Best guess of the start of demolition now is "mid-summer".
