The proposed smoking ban on all Montgomery County-owned property is nearing a vote as the County Council is set to hear the bill's final reading at Tuesday's meeting.

Montgomery County's Health and Human Services Commission recommended the Council approve the ban with the following amendments:

  • Prohibit smoking at bus stops and bus shelters
  • Allow the Director of Health and Human Services to designate outdoor smoking areas on certain County properties
  • Do not prohibit smoking on golf courses
  • Prohibit smoking at County-owned residences, but grandfather existing tenants

Definitely agree with the ban at bus stops - my daughter gags in the bus shelters when she is busing to work. You would think that smokers would be more thoughtful regarding intrusion on others air space in an enclosed space but there you have it. Is the proposed exemption for golf courses because it is generally wealthier people who golf? Or what? Would like to know the rationale for the exemption.
