On Feb. 4, planners will hold the first in a series of public workshops for community input about the future of the Glenmont Shopping Center and the surrounding area. Are you going to attend? Tell us in the comments.
Last week before the Montgomery County Planning Board, Glenmont planner Michael Brown expressed confidence that he could forge consensus for redevelopment plans among the shopping center's 15 properties, even though it has proved difficult in the past.

It is a horrible area!! The shopping center is a mess and unsafe! There needs to be MAJOR changes to make it appealling and used by local residents and passersby! I pass it each day going to work and would NEVER stop there for anything!

Diane is so right. It's absolutely awful. The shops are terrible, but beyond that, the whole place just feels dirty. Maybe it's the sea of asphalt that you have to cross to get to it. Maybe it's the state of the shops. Really, though, there's just nothing I want there. I occasionally stop in the CVS if I absolutely have to get something on the way home from the Metro, but I'm more likely to go to a CVS near my office before I even get on the Metro.
Look at the stores. Two greasy Chinese restaurants, greasy Pizza Hut, the worst beer and wine store in the world , Staples, CVS, a church in the former bowling alley. This is crap. Even the McDonald's, which I don't normally expect much from, is shoved between two dirty service stations. Lovely dining experience right there.
Compare it to Aspen Hill. Yes, it's too busy, but the shops are nice and clean and inviting. The parking lot is clean and not just one huge paved field.
Glenmont is just not a nice place to shop. What would be better? How about a nice restaurant? Even a Five Guys or Panera, like at Aspen Hill, would be an improvement. But really, the whole place needs to go. It was built wrong from the start. New stores wouldn't fix it. To fix it, they would need to tear it down and start from scratch.
