Redevelopment Updates: Lowe Enterprises, BB&T Bank

Find out when construction is expected to start at these sites in Wheaton.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2013 for the apartment building at 11141 Georgia Avenue and the BB&T Bank on University Boulevard in Wheaton, according to a report from the Wheaton Redevelopment Program.

Lowe Enterprises is constructing a 14-story apartment building with approximately 195 units on the site of what is known as the 'Computer Building' on Georgia Avenue.

The BB&T Bank will be built on the west side of University Boulevard across from the Giant at Westfield Wheaton.

Both projects have received their preliminary and site plan approvals.

For the BB&T building, are we talking about a building to replace the BB&T branch on University in front of the Ambassador Apartments? This is the one-story location in a former Howard Johnson's restaurant building.

No. we are talking about a building that replaces the two abandoned houses across from the Giant, on the other side of University Blvd.

It looks like this will replace three lots and single-family homes. Here is a link to the preliminary plan, which includes a sketch of what the building will look like. The building height is restricted by the new sector plan. http://www.montgomeryplanningboard.org/agenda/2012/documents/20120216_BBandTBankKensingtonWheaton.pdf.

Are they ever going to tear down/renovate the Embarrassador Apartments?

Anton--Here's a Patch article on the Ambassador that shows they're still in the early stages of deciding what will become of it: http://wheaton-md.patch.com/articles/redevelopment-proposals-for-ambassador-apartments-under-review.

Thanks for the link Commentous! I am not sure how I missed that article, but it is great news.

I missed it because it was on the Kensington Patch. I do not think that it was featured on the Wheaton Patch. It would be great if Esther and Yaman coordinate so we can have the relevant articles featured on our Wheaton patch.

Anton--Good suggestion. I found it by searching on the Wheaton Patch website for "Ambassador" after reading your question, so I didn't realize it was not in the Wheaton Patch.

Anton - thank you for the clarification. But will this be in addition to the two existing BB&T facilities in Wheaton (i.e. a third facility), or will this replace one or both of them?

The other two facilities will close after this one opens.

I guess one of those facilities is at the intersection of Georgia and Blueridge. Is there a re-development plan after it closes? Form what I can remember, there was a potential buyer for the property but the deal fell through a few months ago.
