Summer of Lunch: La Bamba
Newly renamed Price Avenue restaurant serves classic Tex-Mex and Salvadorian dishes.
Although I’ve lived in Wheaton for a year, I’ve fallen back into familiar eating patterns and haven’t scratched the surface of the wide world of food options in town. This summer, at lunchtime, I’ll be seeking out a place that I haven’t stepped into at all, and trying their signature items.
Repainted and renamed, La Bamba is the restaurant formely known as . La Bamba offers Tex-Mex and El Salvadorian cuisine, but for this lunch, I was far more interested in going with an old favorite - chicken tacos.
La Bamba’s interior is reminiscent of a church or a plaza, with arched columns running down each side of the center of the restaurant. When I arrived it was completely quiet, but I noticed the dance floor and speakers towards the front, off to one side, so it obviously isn't always like this.

Of course, as I came in early (11 a.m.), I was the only person in the restaurant, save for the waitress. She brought me over chips and salsa, far more than one person could handle. The salsa was fresh, but watery enough that could be very close to a gazpacho. I simply brought the chips closer so as to not drip the salsa.
So what does a 11 a.m. meal at La Bamba get you? A cheap, delicious meal with your own personal viewing party of mun2.

For just over $6, I got two tacos loaded with a decent amount of shredded meat, lettuce, salsa and cheese, with lots of rice and beans on the side and two heaps of guacamole and a different salsa nestled nearby. It was a perfect lunch portion - not too big, but enough variety to be filling and interesting.
Owing to its deliciousness and my breakfast that morning of a granola bar, I probably ate the tacos at La Bamba too quickly, and did not enjoy the relative solitide of savoring a good meal.
