'Tis the Season for Art at Westfield Wheaton

Montgomery Art Association celebrated the grand opening of its new art gallery on Tuesday.

Yes, local artists, there is a Santa Claus. And a community of eager and talented volunteers to turn what was once a decrepit space into a beautiful, inviting art gallery.

Vacant since 2008, the space in had been leased by a photography studio, and according to Marketing Director Sidney Woods, was in a state of dilapidation – neglected by the previous owners to such an extent that chemical stains and burns on the carpet were beyond repair.

"The space was left in a rough state," Woods said.

Earlier in the fall, Woods approached Montgomery Art Association (MAA) President Cathy Hirsh about developing a relationship with the group, MAA Board Member Michael Shibley wrote in an e-mail.

"A number of Westfield Management staff participate in the Chamber of Commerce. There are also a few MAA members who do as well," Shibley noted. "So I think that in that context, Sidney Woods approached our president. The discussion started there – progressed to the Holiday Art Fair for Dec. 10 to 12 and then evolved into the [Art] Gallery."

Woods, a self-described connoisseur of the arts, sensed an opportunity to showcase art to the public, and as a result let his vision guide him towards a collaboration that affirms the artistic experience between artists, patrons and novices. Add in a touch of good old-fashioned holiday spirit and the result plays out like a feel-good Hollywood movie: Big corporation donates art gallery space to local artisans.

"I had the idea to create more of a partnership," Woods said. "I want lights on. Any time we have opportunities to open up space, it's a win-win for everyone."

Shibley and a group of MAA volunteers shifted into high gear and set about transforming the dreary space into an airy, light-filled gallery with freshly painted walls and new carpeting.

MAA Vice President and painter Sara Becker could hardly contain her joy for Montgomery Art members, many of who exhibit their work in the group's sponsored shows throughout the year.

"[It's] very exciting – wonderful opportunity," Becker said. It's all about getting chances to exhibit. What could be better than being in a mall with constant exposure?"

Vibrant and rich watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings were among the works of art exhibited at the Art Gallery's Grand Opening on Tuesday. MAA members, including Chilean-born Alejandra Hucek, were in attendance and expressed their delight in seeing their work in the new gallery.

"This is great for the whole group. It's a great venue and will bring a lot of families and children to appreciate art," Hucek said.
