Wheaton Costco Opening Delayed

The Costco at Westfield Wheaton will not open Oct. 18 as planned, due to construction issues, the Gazette reports.

An unspecified construction issue is delaying the opening of the Costco at Westfield Wheaton, the Gazette reported Thursday.

Jeffrey Ishida, vice president of real estate development for Costco Wholesale’s eastern division, told the Gazette that the delay was not related to the Costco gas station plans.

No new grand opening date has been announced.

Has Costco released the proposed location of the gas station to the public? I know that they don't have the zoning permission to build but I haven't seen where Costco wants to build it. Folks have talked about a new location but nothing firm has been released that I know of.

A possible opening date is in Feburary, The construction issue was with the floor. When the steel racks went up, the floor began to crack.

Costco reps are unwilling to discuss reasons for the delay. Care to tell us how/where you got the info about the cracking floors?

Indeed, we had a meeting last night of our homeowners' association at which the main Costco guy -- Eric Brann -- was there and we asked repeatedly what was the problem and he repeatedly dodged the question (in a markedly evasive fashion). Unfortunately, this came up right at the end of the meeting and we had to clear the room space, so he was able to keep stonewalling the questions, but it certainly makes you wonder. If they can't be honest about what the problems are with their building -- how much can you trust what they tell us about their gas station (which they now propose to build even CLOSER to the home in our community and to the disabled children at Stephen Knolls)? Certainly leads one to ponder.

Whoa. Cracking floor? I would hate to be shopping at the planned Dick's Sporting Goods that is supposed to go under the new Costco.

As long as they have a kosher bakery and kosher food life will be good. We can wait a little longer

I'm sensing a construction trend in Montgomery County: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/silver-spring-transit-center-delayed-indefinitely/2012/01/13/gIQAvBmNxP_allComments.html?ctab=all_&; Its amazing that government doesn't have the teeth to enforce fines and penalties upon this industry. I guess we can't expect change from a capitalistic system when politicians are on the take from the very industries they are supposed to regulate.

Doesn't anyone know how to mix concrete anymore? Why save money on cheap clinker??

Costco and its insurer have a lot more at stake in getting the concrete right than does the government. They SHOULD have structural engineers and materials testing companies to make sure problems like this don't occur. It is pretty shocking that they would have a problem. Better now than after they have a bunch of squished customers (I'm sorry, "members").
