Wheaton Ranks 30th in Metro Crime
Crime throughout the Metro system has risen over the last five years.
WMATA released its quarterly report on crime at Metro stations, and Wheaton ranks 30th out of 69 stations.
The Metro station that ranked first, with the most crime by far, was the Anacostia station in Washington, D.C., with 32 property crimes and three crimes against a person.
WMATA reported five property crimes and one crime against a person at the Wheaton Metro station in the first three months of 2012. Three people were arrested in February, for motor vehicle theft, obstruction of justice and pickpocketing. The reason behind an arrest in mid-March was listed as "fail to pay established fare."
Crime has risen system-wide over the last five years. There were 145 more crimes at Metro stations in the first quarter of 2012 than there were in the first quarter of 2008.
- 2008 - 353
- 2009 - 357
- 2010 - 490
- 2011 - 417
- 2012 - 498

I can see night being a time where one feels unsafe especially on the Reedie side exit. Im sure once the Safeway is up and there is more lighting and traffic that this could change

Perfectly fine at most hours, except late hours when the mall is closed, especially if I plan walking home (about 3/4 mile from the Metro).

I feel safe there. I have never had a problem or felt unsafe.

I try to be alert leaving on the Reedie side (through the garage), but I don't think it's any more dangerous than any of the downtown stations.
