'Day of the Book' draws reading lovers to downtown Kensington.
Author readings, colorful tents and balloons, oven-fired pizza, cupcakes and a devotion to the creative world of reading and books drew hundreds to historic Old Town Kensington Sunday for the Day of the Book festival. More than 100 local authors, poets, publishers, literary groups and community organizations lined Howard Avenue for three blocks. Live music featured The Nighthawks and Atomic Swing Club, and there were poetry recitations, chess playing, rare books, art sales and crafts exhibits, as well as kids' events and activities. The event was co-sponsored by the Town of Kensington and Biblioteca Catalana, the library of the Pauli Bellet Foundation, housed on the second floor of Kensington Row Bookshop on Howard Avenue. The Wheaton Drama Club will perform Disney's Aladdin this weekend, beginning Thursday night.
It's that time of year again, when local high schools perform their spring musicals. The Wheaton Drama Club at Wheaton High School presents Disney's Aladdin on April 18, 19 and 20. The show starts at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are available at the door: $7 for adults, $5 for students. Other local high schools are also putting on shows this weekend:

This weekend, Northwood High School is taking audiences through a musical review of the last six decades. Northwood students will perform Billboard Magic 2013; DECADIA, which includes popular, toe-tapping music from the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80, '90s and 2000s to today. The show will run Thursday, April 18 (7 p.m.), Friday, April 19 (7 p.m.), and Saturday, April 20 (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) Each performance will be held at the Harry A. It's the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, transported to New York City, where the star-crossed lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs. John F. Kennedy High School students will perform West Side Story on April 19 and 20 from 7-9 p.m. and on April 21 from 2-4 p.m. in the high school auditorium at 1901 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD 20902. Oscar nominee Julian Assange biopic and more to air during 11-day festival.
Since the first event in 1987, Filmfest DC has shown more than 1,000 feature-length and short films from more than 55 countries, with celebrity guests including Morgan Freeman, Charlize Theron, Sydney Pollack, Salman Rushdie and Amitabh Bachchan. The 27th installment of the annual event runs from April 11-21, and will kick off with a screening of Underground, a film portraying the young life of Julian Assange, the infamous founder of WikiLeaks. The film will start at 7 p.m. at Regal Cinemas Gallery Place and feature a live telephone interview with Assange himself immediately following the screening.
