Wheaton communities are fortunate in having schools with strong environmental programs. It takes passionate teachers to build strong programs. Over the years I have had the honor of working with one of those teachers, Erol Miller, a science teacher at Northwood High School.
As a teacher at Northwood, Mr. Miller has been engaging his students in efforts to green Wheaton. His students have conducted a student-led study on greening the Wheaton CBD, worked to remove invasive plants in Sligo Creek, conducted stream studies, and most recently helped complete the Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail.
GreenWheaton members are, therefore, pleased to learn that he was recently named the 2012 Chesapeake Bay Trust's Educator of the Year. Each year, the Trust recognizes an outstanding Maryland educator who has shown an outstanding commitment to environmental education.
With this award, he will receive a $2,500 grant to provide more outstanding environmental opportunities for Northwood students. GreenWheaton heartily congratulates Mr. Miller on his recognition, and we look forward to working with him in the future.

Quick Update on Northwood High School and Erol Miller. Got this email update:
Today in the Four Seasons Ballroom of the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, at the 2nd Annual Greenschools National Conference, Arne Duncan, the United States' Secretary of Education, specifically mentioned our very own Northwood High School as a national example of a great green school in his keynote address!
He specifically mentioned our nature trail - The Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail.
