MCPL does still have a summer challenge - kids can sign up to read X number of minutes (1000 is theRead More minimum) or a number of books (5, is the minimum). They received a voucher for a Frederick Keys ticket on signing up and they get a prize book bag when they meet their goal. And they can keep track online.

I get that they give away frederick keys tickets bc that is what is donated but come on. Many likeRead More baseball, many dont. Plus with no care getting to a game by metro is hard. What about the free ice cream or personal pizza ? And WHERE IS THE BIG BANNER? There used to be a huge Summer Reading banner. I guess I shouldnt be surprised. I mean the library has fired all the knowledgeable librarians and replaced them with know nothings who are paid the lowest wage. Do they have degrees in library science? And WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN'S LIBRARIANS ?

One year ago I gave my granddaughter an Ipad. I gave it to her because we awoke one morning to findRead More her teaching herself spelling with an Ipad app she somehow found. Since then she has taught herself numbers and the alphabet. About 6 months ago she was talking to us with bizarre phrases. It took us a few days to realize she was speaking Chinese. Children want to read and learn and I don't think it matters whether it's summer or winter.

Federal Realty plans to make an announcement soon regarding an Aldi and LA Fitness. In addition,Read More Federal Realty has informed us they plan on doing a major renovation of the shopping center. There was a hold-up because Starbucks has a clause in their contract regarding stores that sell coffee in the same shopping center. I’ve been informed that this issue has been resolved and they are awaiting a finalized amended contract with Starbucks that will allow the Aldi to move forward.

Until the Democratic elite, who push for public schools and ever powerful public school unions, sendRead More their kids to public schools nothing will change. It's hypocritical for politicians like Obama to send their kids to privaet schools then pretend they "are one of us."

As an educator and a mom to an elementary aged child, I will say to be wary of the store brandRead More pencils. The pencil sharpeners will eat the cheap pencils up! I've found over the years that Dixon Ticonderoga pencils hold up well. Plus, they're made in the USA :-)

Here is a link to a great editorial in the Washington Post about how DC Public Schools have mistakenRead More rote learning for real education. It was written by a Georgetown freshman named Darryl Robinson who says he was unprepared for college level work in some of DCPS's top schools. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/i-went-to-one-of-dcs-best-high-schools-i-was-still-unprepared-for-college/2012/04/13/gIQAqQQAFT_story.html Critical thinking skills are critically important, but are hard to assess with all the standardized tests that supposedly measure "learning". Our students deserve to be prepared in the world, not just on a test. I am very proud of the kind of learning that takes place at our school, Evergreen, and schools like ours. I hope Starr's efforts result in genuine reform for the school children of Montgomery County.
