About this column:

Walk around Wheaton and you can also travel the world with your taste buds. Eating Around Wheaton shares stories and reviews from local restaurants.
I'm usually skeptical of any restaurant offering two distinct styles of cuisine under one roof, so Woomi Garden was something of an epiphany. Japanese and Korean food do go together - sushi can be a light, balancing starter before Korean barbecue. Offering a tasty variety of both cuisines, Woomi Garden was a delight. At Woomi the ambiance is pleasant, complete with running fountain, fish pond, Sushi bar and wood and paper walls. The cuisine, including a vast array of dining options, is flavorful and prepared expertly. The service is attentive without being overbearing. My party decided to try…
Have you heard about the place behind the Wheaton Laundromat? Silver food truck, 10 pictures of plates on its side, and no name? There are usually people waiting for food nearby, and it's really good. I've walked by this particular truck several times, always on my way to some other neighborhood joint. The smells wafting about are unreal. The truck is owned by Ulizes, who says he has worked at Austin Grill and Jaleo in the past but now runs his own mobile (theoretically, anyway, since it stays in its Laundromat parking lot location) business selling fresh, made-to-order Mexican and …
Wheaton's Target recently began offering produce and expanded their grocery section. Food now represents a full quarter of the top floor of the Wheaton store, a majority of it shelved package items and expanded freezer offerings.  Maya Chaplin, a manager at the store said that the renovation had doubled their food offerings, including the produce section and larger selection of pantry goods. But how can Target's new food section compete against Giant Food, a full grocery store right across the mall ring road? I did a quick comparison of the classic grocery staples: milk and eggs. Dozen …
Like many of my fellow Patch editors, I enjoy visiting farmers markets, finding some fresh items, and experimenting with cooking. There's a certain excitement in opening up your refrigerator, looking around and making up a recipe on the spot. But – there's also very much a time (the weekend) and a place (the couch) for when making a meal is the absolute last thing on your list.  So who delivers in Wheaton? Here's some of the stand-outs from the directory Kenny's Sub Shop www.kennysubshop.com (301) 933-8888 Open to 11pm Sunday – Friday, midnight on Saturday. This Georgia Avenue hole-in-the-…
Cristina Ristorante Italiano is a small, but busy restaurant on University Boulevard that serves up Italian entrees - as well as a lunch menu. As I have only one food specialty – raised in a family with its own "gravy" recipe - so I went to try it out on Wednesday evening. We started with bruschetta as an appetizer. I was torn – while fairly delicious, it was closer to garlic bread with a tomato relish on the side. The bread was saturated with olive oil, but the outside was crunchy. While putting the tomato topping on the side gave us each a choice about how much we wanted on the bread, it …
Walking to New Kam Fong, I got a glimpse inside the kitchen, which has a door on a side street. The first thing I noticed are the numerous aquatic tanks holding a variety of fishes and lobsters. The fish were swimming around and around, seemingly in good condition, the water crystal clear. Giddy at the sight of all that fresh and healthy seafood, all I could think was, "We are going to eat well tonight." And we did. New Kam Fong offers an extensive menu of dim sum, seafood, barbeque and Cantonese specialties. The staff is friendly, but not overly attentive, and very helpful with menu …
If you think rotisserie chicken is the same at any chicken joint, you haven't had Peruvian-style chicken. And if you think all Peruvian places are the same, you haven't been to the original The Chicken Place, located on University Boulevard. Sure, there is a chain of The Chicken Places located in Virginia and The District, but only the Wheaton Chicken Place has been around since 1990, serving Peruvian classics ranging from fresh ceviche to chicharron to Lomo Saltado, a tasty steak dish you'll read more about shortly. For those not in the know, Peruvian chicken is coated in a mix of savory and…
Tucked into a row of low-slung beige brick buildings on University Boulevard sits a hidden gem. Fresh, colorful, juicy, spicy, savory and sweet, Dusit Thai's cuisine will leave you wanting to come back to try more, new and different wonders. Having heard that people in and around Wheaton were recommending Dusit Thai, two friends and I dropped in on a recent Friday night to check it out for ourselves. Don't let the folding tables and paper napkins or the busy glow of different colors of neon coming from every corner of the place fool you, Dusit Thai is serious about its food. Dusit Thai's …
