Spring begins in January in the Conservatory when
plants that flower in cool temperatures and short day length bring color and
fragrance to the dark days of winter. Plants from tropical climates, like
Cymbidium orchids, various Citrus cultivars, winter Jasmine and African Melianthus major add
global representation to the collection of plants on display. More familiar
garden flowers will include Matthiola
incana
-florists’ stock, Antirrhinum
majus
- snapdragons, Calendula
officinalis
, Abutilon , Violas and Regal Geraniums (Pelargonium). Many of
the permanent plants also flower in the early months adding to the riot of
color in the season display beds. Bird of paradise-Strelitzia, Begonias and Calliandra-powderpuff
tree are typically in flower from January on into the spring.

At the north end of Wheaton's Regional Park is the colorful and calm Brookside Gardens, a showcase garden with trails. Photography is popular here, but only individual photographers can snap away without a permit. The conservatory offers a daily live butterfly show, usually mid April through early September, while the visitor center offers information on the gardens, as well as a gift shop.
