Melissa Morrison, 36, a 12-year resident of Damascus, was recently diagnosed with a rare bone marrow cancer called MDS.

Her friends and family have put together a 5K & Fun Run in order to raise support for Morrison and her family.

The race will take place at Kemptown Park (3456-B Kemptown Church Road in Monrovia) on June 14 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Runners doing the 5K will run the one-mile loop in the back of the park three times. Families are also welcome, along with strollers, for a casual one-mile fun run or stroll. Bikes will not be permitted

“I am currently on day 48 in the hospital, frustrated and confused, but optimistic and blessed for the wonderful support I have witnessed,” Morrison wrote in a personal statement sent to Patch in an email. “While lying here being sad and depressed would be so easy, I find faith and hope that even though there appears to be only one set of footprints in the sand, I find comfort in the fact that there will always be someone there to carry us through our darkest hours.”

Those interested in going out to support the Morrison family and participate can register online or in person the day of the event beginning at 7:30 a.m.
