Weekend Events: Orchids, Gem and Fossil Show, Community Fair and More

Looking for something exciting to do this weekend in Wheaton? Check out some of the fun things going on around town and in the rest of Montgomery County.

Orchid Show and Sale

  • Where: Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Ave, Silver Spring, MD 
  • When: Saturday, March 16, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Sunday, March 17, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Description: Come to the Visitors Center to see a vibrant display of orchids. Repotting services will be available for a small fee from Clive Atyeo, orchid supervisor, U.S. Botanic Gardens. A wide variety of orchids will be on sale from top regional vendors, and experts will be on hand with growing tips.
  • Cost: Free

Edison Community Fair

  • Where: Thomas Edison High School of Technology, 12501 Dalewood Dr Silver Spring, MD 20906
  • When: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  • Description: The fair will feature kids carnival games, a moonbounce, a flea market, a silent auction, food and a DJ. The students will be providing auto safety checks, blood pressure tests and nail art.
  • Cost: Free

13th Annual Swing into Spring

  • Where:  Springbrook High School, 201 Valley Brook Dr, Silver Spring
  • When: Saturday, Mar. 16, 7 p.m.
  • Description:  A candlelight dinner, free swing dance lessons, and a silent auction. Springbrook High School String Orchestra and Jazz Band Ensembles will also be featured. 
  • Cost: $25

Spring Vegetable Garden Open House

  • Where:  18410 Muncaster Rd, Derwood
  • When: Saturday, Mar. 16, 9 a.m.
  • Description:  Montgomery County Master Gardeners and Grow It Eat It, Maryland's Food Gardening Network, will host a vegetable garden open house to teach the attendees how to start a vegetable garden or improve an existing one.  
  • Cost: Free

Yard/bake/craft sale to benefit breast cancer research

  • Where:  5808 Namakagan Rd, Bethesda
  • When:  Saturday, Mar. 16, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Description:  Rain date, Sunday, Mar. 17. This is a charity event with 100% of the proceeds to be donated to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Your support of this event will help four walkers achieve their fundraising goal in order to participate in walking 40 miles to support breast cancer research.
  • Cost: Free 

Cool Cow Comedy and VisArts Presents: Stand-Up Comedy Series in Rockville

  • Where:  155 Gibbs St, Rockville
  • When:  Friday, Mar. 15, 8 p.m.
  • Description:  VisArts and Cool Cow Comedy presents the comedy styles of Mike Lawrence.
  • Cost: $15

H2O Summit

  • Where:  506 S Frederick Ave, Gaithersburg
  • When:  Saturday, Mar. 16, 9 a.m.
  • Description:  H2O Summit will feature hands-on activities for kids and families from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.   There will be demonstrations, crafts, music and more.
  • Cost:  Free

Farmer's Market at Rockville Town Center

  • Where:  36 Maryland Ave, Rockville
  • When:  Saturday, Mar. 16, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Description:  Items for sale include: fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, baking goods, preservatives, bedding plants and more.
  • Cost:  Free

  • Where: Montgomery County Agricultural Services, 16 Chestnut St, Gaithersburg
  • When: Saturday, Mar. 16, 10 a.m.
  • Description:  Presented by Gem, Lapidiary, and Mineral Society of Montgomery County.  Over 40 exhibits, door prizes, demonstrations, free workshops for kids and adults, mini mine, famous fluorescent display, raffle, and free parking.
  • Cost:  $6

You Can't Take It With You

  • Where:  James Hubert Blake High School, 300 Norwood Rd, Colesville
  • When: Friday, Mar. 8, 7:30 p.m.
  • Description:  James Hubert Blake High School presents their spring show: ‘You Can’t Take it With  You’

Northwest High School Presents: IN THE HEIGHTS

  • Where: Northwest High School, 13591 Richter Farm Rd, Germantown
  • When: Friday, Mar. 8, 7 p.m.
  • Description:  Northwest High School Drama Department presents it’s spring musical: In the Heights.
