What You Need to Know About Metro: August 19

Wheaton among five stations closed this weekend: buses will replace trains between Ft. Totten and Glenmont.

Welcome back to the weekend, and of course, a few Metro delays. Some Red Line stations, including Wheaton, will be completely closed this weekend for ongoing major track work. Today (8/19), trains on the Red, Blue and Orange Lines will continue to share one track, as has been the case all week. 

Below is more on what you need to know to prepare for wherever you're going on the Metro system this weekend.

Service impacts in effect from 10 p.m. Friday 8/19 through closing Sunday 8/21:

Red Line: 

Customers traveling through the Red line work zone advised to allow about 45 minutes of additional travel time.

  • Free bus service will replace trains between Ft. Totten and Glenmont, as stations between will be closed for major track work.
  • Stations closed are Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton, and Glenmont.
  • Red Line service will continue operate normally between the Fort Totten and Shady Grove stations.

Blue Line/Yellow Line: 

Customers are advised to allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time through this area.

  • Blue Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road stations, as personnel make repairs.
  • Blue Line trains will share also share one track, between Arlington Cemetery and Pentagon City stations.
  • Blue Line trains will depart endpoint terminals about every 20 minutes all weekend.
  • Yellow Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon stations.

Orange Line:

Customers are advised to allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.

  • Trains will share one track between the Vienna and West Falls Church stations to allow for rail and tie renewal.
  • Every other train from New Carrollton will turn back at West Falls Church station, on Saturday and Sunday from opening to 9:30 p.m.
