Chamber of Commerce to Highlight Community Leaders

The annual awards ceremony will recognize Brookside Gardens and present scholarships to local high school students.

 

The 28th Annual Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce Community Awards Banquet will be held at the at 11160 Veirs Mill Road on April 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. 

Chamber administrator Vicky Surles says Brookside Gardens, the renowned landscape display garden of Montgomery County, will be honored for its 43 years of service and contributions to the community with a special presentation by the Brookside Gardens director, Stephanie Oberle, and Mary Bradford, director of Parks & Planning. There will also be scholarships distributed to outstanding high school students with proven leadership and entrepreneurial potential through local business sponsorships.

Other award categories include:

  • The Mid-County Citizen’s Advisory Board’s Civic Association and Citizen of the Year
  • The Police, Rescue Squad and Fire Department Public Safety and Officer of the Year Awards
  • Einstein, Kennedy and Wheaton High Schools’ Teacher, ESOL Student and Community Service Awards
  • Chamber of Commerce’s Member of the Year, Business of the Year, and Outstanding Chamber Service Award

Each committee and organization— the MCCAB, the various rescue squads, each school administration and the chamber— nominate and vote for the recipient(s) of their awards internally, based on exemplary displays of heroics, unmatched philanthropic efforts, great improvement in school and monetary contributions to the chamber and its initiatives, according to Surles.
