Bites Nearby: Royal Mile Pub

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Wheaton Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice.

Irish pubs are so yesterday. Scottish pubs, now that's where it's at.

At least that's what the fans of the would have you believe.

Step into the blessedly air-conditioned downtown Wheaton treasure this summer and revisit the tartan bedecked pub in the winter or fall when the dining room fireplace will be roaring. The Royal Mile has been serving up Scottish fare and libations for over 20 years. With single malt Scotch tasting happy hours for connouisseurs every Thursday night and live music sessions for children on select Sunday nights during the school year, the events calendar is almost as popular as the environment and food

The pub menu is authentic and savory. Best bets include the Royal Mile stew, Nessie's Royal Mile fish and chips and the steak and ale pie. Non-Scottish items that make the mouth water are the Maryland fried chicken, Burn's BLT and the Prince Charlie sandwich, which has both a salmon fillet and smoked salmon for double your seafood lovin' pleasure.

The children's menu is affordable and just as non-frozen as the adult offerings, with dishes such as homemade battered chicken tenders and a hamburger for "the wee ones". While kids are waiting for their meal they can grab a handful of crayons and select one of the many coloring books to pass the (short) wait.
