Mayorga Coffee Shop Opening Delayed by Costco Construction Issues

Mayorga wants to move into Westfield Wheaton's new Costco wing.

Martin Mayorga, president and founder of Mayorga Coffee, wants to open what he calls an "authentic, Latin-style coffee shop" in Westfield Wheaton, right across from the incoming Costco.

However, Costco's announcement that construction issues will delay the wholesale store's scheduled Oct. 18 grand opening has also thrown a wrench in Mayorga's plans.

"We're in limbo now," Mayorga told Patch in a phone interview.

Mayorga is waiting to hear back from Westfield Wheaton to see when it can move into the new Costco wing. The mall already announced on its Facebook page that the coffee shop will be moving in this fall.

Mayorga, a Rockville-based company, operates seven retail locations, including one in Shady Grove Hospital. This will be Mayorga's first location in a mall and what the company's president calls an experiment with "a smaller model in a high traffic area."

But for now, coffee drinkers will have to wait for their organic Café Cubano and empanadas until Costco's uncertainties shake themselves out.
