Quick End Sought in Wheaton Costco Gas Station Case

Opponents say that Costco underestimated the air pollution that the gas station would cause.

Could a math error bring Costco's special exception case for a gas station in Wheaton to an early end?

That's what the Kensington Heights Civic Association is hoping. The group, which opposes the siting of a 16-pump gas station on the Westfield Wheaton mall property, has filed a motion for summary disposition of Costco's special exception, according to a transcript of the July 30 public hearing.

The group says that a math error on Costco's part led to a gross underestimate of air pollutants, which would exceed EPA standards.

Costco responded to the allegations with this statement:
"This is a matter that is still before the Zoning Hearing Examiner, however we remain confident that the proposed Wheaton gas station will comply with all applicable EPA standards."

The public hearing for the case began in April; more transcripts are available online.

While the motion is being considered, the special exception hearings will continue as scheduled on Sept. 9, 16, 20, and 23; and October 17, 21, 24, and 28.
