Safeway Dominates Wheaton Skyline

Find out when construction is expected to finish.

It's hard for anyone passing through Wheaton's downtown area to miss the massive structure rising from the ground at the corner of Reedie Drive and Georgia Avenue.

When completed, the 17-story building will include a Safeway grocery store and apartments.

The Safeway grocery store, under construction across from the Wheaton Metro Station, is anticipated to open late this summer, according to a report from the Wheaton Redevelopment Program. The apartments above the Safeway will be completed by this fall, the report said.

The new mixed-use facility will also include a SunTrust bank, Bergman’s drycleaner and a Starbucks, Patch reported in October.

Great photos, BUT...the heavy construction equipment traffic and repeated excavation of Reedie to work on utilities have made a hazardous mess of the street...which this morning had one lonely orange cone in the middle of the street on the uphill side across from Metro entrance...but more sink holes than warning cones. Be careful...drive slowly... Where are county and contractor and utilities inspectors to keep this problem better contained? Hank Wieland, Wheaton resident since 1972.

Nice pictures. Hopefully more of these large buildings start popping up in Wheaton similar to what B.F. Saul initially suggested before the council decision against Wheaton redevelopments.

Anton- Of course they will, where else will the Council warehouse all of the Sec. 8 vouchers they have backed up?

I'm very excited for this Safeway. I can stop by on my way home from the metro. Super convenient. I hope that the construction team will be a bit more aware of the trash they make that flies into neighboring areas. Also I hope something happens to protect pedestrians in the general vicinity, as right now it is treacherous. But, in general, I am excited for the Safeway. (AND the Starbucks!!!)

Tal - I am hoping for nice mixed use developments including office buildings, retail, condos, and market rate apartments. Wheaton has more than its fair share of MPDUs and subsidized units. We are looking for real developments that serve the needs of those who really care about their permanent homes and businesses in Wheaton.

Anton- It sounds like you are hoping for the BF Saul plan....Ive given up on the county being anything other than being a giant piggybank for the unions, LEDC, and construction firms. If nothing else the debacle of the Silver Spring transit center or the current state of our schools and budget relative to Fairfax county shows that the Council cant manage its way out of a paper bag and has the spine of a wet noodle. My guess is this complex will have the same issues as Archstone and MetroPointe---overpriced for regular tenants so they fill their halls with voucher and remain vacant otherwise. Mixed use will consist of Safeway, 3 check cashing places and a beer store.

Wasn't Foulger-Pratt responsible for managing the Silver Spring Transit Center project as well? Has anyone double-checked on their work on this project? Some reassurance that similar mistakes in reading contract requirements haven't been made here. The last thing Wheaton needs is a giant unfinished building as a result of poor construction.
