Wheaton HS Runner Places 2nd at Down County Championship

The high school cross country season winds down with local schools and runners vying for the top county honors. That final push began Saturday at the DCC Championships.

Considering the rain that hit the area all week, Saturday, October 15, turned out to be a beautiful day. The air was crisp and the sky clear. It was perfect running weather.

Just what hundreds of athletes probably hoped for at the of the 3rd Annual Down County Consortia (DCC) Cross Country Championships, hosted by Northwood High School. Runners from Einstein, Northwood, Kennedy, Paint Branch, Springbrook, Montgomery Blair and Blake, as well as Wheaton High School, all competed in the 5k race.

Top honors for the boys went to Einstein’s Nick Simpson with a time of 17:30.  Second place was taken by Wheaton’s Naimbai Njerakey in 17:38, followed closely by Blair’s Mathew Morris in 17:39.

Each team from Einstein, Blair, Paint Branch and Wheaton had two runners or more in the top 15.  Incredibly, Einstein managed to put seven of their boys runners in the top 15.  The top four boys teams finished, in order, Einstein, Blair, Paint Branch and Wheaton.

In the womens grouping it was Montgomery Blair that dominated finishing one, two and three, and placing seven runners in the top 15.  Blair’s top runners finished, in order,  Morgana D'Ottavi 20:42, Hannah Buchek 21:37 and Sara Shonkwiler 22:05.  Blair's team finished first overall, followed by Einstein, Springbrook and Northwood.
