Frugal Families: Summer Fun
Five family-friendly activities that won't break the bank!
Pricey vacations, amusement parks and blockbuster movies are not the only ways to celebrate summer with a family. Check out these free and reasonably-priced activities for summer fun!
1. Wheaton TGIF Summer Concert and Movies Series
Free movies and music in Wheaton Triangle on Fridays at 7 p.m. This week bring a blanket to catch Despicable Me. Full schedule.

Pool daily fees or membership dues got you down? Head to this "sprayground" for just $5 per person age 2 and up (if you purchase the splash & miniature golf combo, admission is $7.50 per person). Discount ticket books available for $45 for 10 admissions. Bonus: the splash playground doesn't require waterwings (or, if your kids are old enough, even wrangling yourself into a swimsuit).
Good through: Labor Day weekend. Open daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through August 28, closed August 29 to September 2, open Labor Day weekend September 3 through 5 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
3. Newseum - Free Kids' Admission
Youth visitors 18 and under get in free with one paid adult admission or Newseum membership card. Offer is limited to up to 10 kids. Children six and under are always free.
Good through: Sept. 5, 2011.
4. Fort Reno Free Concert Series
Free family-friendly concerts on Monday and Thursday evenings. Babies, dogs and picnicking encouraged. All shows begin at 7:15 p.m. sharp and are finished by 9:30 p.m.
Good through: August 4, 2011.
On Fridays mornings, the AFI turns down the lights and sound and welcomes babies for free with their parents or caregivers. Adults get in at the matinee price.
