Metro bracing for effects of Hurricane Irene with chainsaws, sandbags

Metro riders concerned about the impact of Hurricane Irene on service can get updates online at wmata.com and via Twitter @wmata. Metrorail customers may also sign up for Metro alerts via email by visiting wmata.com or tune to broadcast traffic reports for service information.

Metro advises riders to move cautiously on wet services, to stand well back from platform edges in the event of high winds, to refrain from walking through stations with open umbrellas, and to allow extra travel time as Metrobuses and MetroAccess vehicles will be detouring around downed trees and/flooded streets as necessary.

Meanwhile, Metro has deployed chainsaws in its motor vehicles, in case downed trees have to be removed from rail lines, and has placed more than 2,000 sandbags around escalators at Metrorail stations with a history of flooding issues. Wheaton is not among those stations.
