The Wheaton 5: Aug. 25

Five things to help you plan your day.

1. Goodbye earthquake, hello storms... a partly sunny morning and a chance of showers beings the day, likely to develop into gusty thunderstorms by afternoon including some with heavy rains. Highs will be in the upper 80s with southwest winds 10-15 mph all day. This evening will remain mostly cloudy with a chance of storms continuing and lows in the 60s. Rain chances are 70 percent during the day, 50 percent this evening.

2. Get ready for back-to-school: today is Orientation Day, starting at 7:20 a.m. at Wheaton High School, John F. Kennedy High School and Northwood High School; and it's New Student Orientation Day at Sligo Middle School. Later this afternoon, Wheaton High will also hold a Back-to-School Cookout for students and families, from 5-7 p.m. For the younger set, Oakland Terreace elementary school hosts an Open House and Ice Cream Social, at 12:30 and 2:00p.m.

3. "Where were you?" has become a familar greeting in the DC area since Tuesday's quake--with tales to go along. Wheaton residents shared a few of their own earthquake adventures in a Patch video. Catch the story if you missed it.

4. It's been rocky, but we've almost made it through another work week. Coming up at noon today, start planning your weekend fun with Get Out, our weekly rundown of local events and activities for you and the family.

5. This is the last day of MCPS's School Supplies Collection drive, to gather new supplies and backpacks for children in need. Donated items can be dropped off today at county Whole Foods Market locations, or the MCPS Department of Family and Community Partnerships. Call 301-279-3100 or see event listing for more information.
