COLESVILLE—Dozens of apartments were damaged in a fire started by an electrical malfunction at a complex in the Briggs Chaney neighborhood. More than 100 firefighters quelled the three-alarm fire and rescued 17 residents from the burning building. The American Red Cross is working to find temporary housing for 74 residents whose homes were damaged. . 

WHEATON—Private developer B.F. Saul has pulled out of its Wheaton redevelopment plans, but says it wants to be involved in Wheaton's future. One commentator called it "a blow to the revitalization of downtown Wheaton." 

POTOMAC—Three citizens' groups have won a lawsuit alleging Montgomery County failed to turn over documents the residents sought in a campaign to keep an organic farm in Potomac from being turned into soccer fields. 

ROCKVILLE—The Humane Society and other animal rights activists are calling for 15 young chimpanzees used for research by the National Institutes of Health and housed at a Rockville laboratory to be sent to an animal sanctuary rather than back to the Louisiana research center that owns them. 

 GAITHERSBURG—Montgomery County Police say a 21-year-old woman was raped Monday afternoon in a Montgomery County conservation park behind the Hadley Farms community pool in Gaithersburg. .

CHEVY CHASE—Chevy Chase Circle sits on the boundary between Chevy Chase Village and the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC. The circle itself is owned by the National Park Service, and Maryland state Route 185 (Connecticut Avenue) runs around the circle, along with Western Avenue (the Maryland-DC boundary) and a couple of smaller streets. What happens when Chevy Chase, DC, starts pushing for traffic signals on the circle? A jurisdictional nightmare. 

Bethesda Woman Searches For Mystery Good Samaritan

BETHESDA—A Bethesda woman is hoping to connect with a Good Samaritan who pulled her from her crushed car during last month's derecho. Susan Riley required 40 surgical staples to close the gash in her head after a tree fell on her Toyota, and she says she would have bled to death had a mystery man not driven her to the hospital. Read more on Bethesda Patch.

TAKOMA PARK—Takoma Park City Manager Barbara Matthews will be resigning Sept. 7 to take a position as city manager for Rockville. Matthews leaves after eight years as Takoma Park's top administrative manager. During her tenure, the Takoma Park Community Center Auditorium and Public Works Facility were both renovated to high standards of environmental sustainability and solar panels were installed on several city facilities, according to a Takoma Park news release.
