THE CONFORMIST [Il conformist] Screening
AFI Silver is screening THE CONFORMIST [Il conformist], director Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece based on the eponymus 1951 novel by Alberto Moravia. Set in 1930s fascist Italy, the film chronicles the life of Marcello Clerici, a bourgeois Italian whose desire to fit in leads him to join the burgeoning fascist party, jeopardize his marriage, and betray his mentor.
Oscar-nominated cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro, will discuss the film following the screening. Storaro was nominated for Best Cinematography four times, winning for APOCALYPSE NOW, REDS and THE LAST EMPEROR. This screening is presented in partnership with the Georgetown University Italian Research Institute, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute.
