Ravellenics - have your yarn?

Are you knitting or crocheting for Ravellenics? What do you have on your hook or needles for this yarn-y competition?

Knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers - surely you've heard of Ravellenics.  Even if you aren't a yarn-crafter, you may have heard about it; it was recently on the news when the official Olympic folks made the popular needlecraft round-up change its name.  The idea is to start a project - a scarf, a sweater, some yarn-based thing - during the Opening Ceremonies and have it complete by the time all the Gold, Silver, and Bronzes have been awarded, all the tears have been shed, and the cheers have been screamed.  Its sponsored ("sponsored"? not sure that's the most correct term but let's go with it unless someone corrects me) by Ravelry.com.

This year I'm "competing" with a knit scarf.  I'm just learning to knit, teaching myself via how-to books, YouTube, and frantic calls to one of my knitting friends, trying to remember the difference between knitting and purling.

I'm using the Hitch-hiker scarf pattern, recommended by the above mentioned friend because she said it was simple enough for me to keep up with it - 2 repeating rows until the yarn runs out.  Yeah, I might be able to handle that.  The yarn I picked for it is this multi-colored yarn from Paca-Peds, an alpaca/wool blend sock yarn.  (I like sock yarn but don't make a lot of socks, I don't often have the patience to make 2 of the exact thing.)  The pink that  started with came with the multicolored skein, to strengthen the stitches thru the heel, if you were making socks.  For my scarf, the pink will be the skinnier tip and lead into the multicolored section.  I think I bought this at The Yarn Spot in Wheaton.

I only work on this while I'm actually watching the Olympics.  I'm not really sure that's a rule, that's just the way I'm going about this competition.  Although, if it gets down to the last volleyball game or boxing match, I might have to carry it around everywhere so I can cast-off as the Olympians are packing up to leave London.
