1 House, 23 Designers, 37 Days, 1 Great Cause

The DC Design House opens to the public on Saturday, April 14 and remains open until Sunday, May 13. Times are: Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door, $20.

The DC Design House is a unique design show house event for the DC Metro area where top designers showcase their talents to raise funds for Children’s National Medical Center. Situated on a one-half-acre site, this year's home, also known as the Blue House, boasts 10,000 square feet, seven-bedrooms, and seven baths.  The designers, along with rooms they’ll be designing in the order of the flow of the tour, are below:

The Spring Valley house, owned by the Francisco Aguirre Revocable Trust and the Gladys Aguirre Revocable Trust, was built in 1956 by W.C. & A.N. Miller for Dr. Francisco and Gladys Aguirre, who raised six children in the home. The late Dr. Aguirre was an international consultant as well as a founder of the Diairo Las Americas newspaper, still run by the family in Miami. Mrs. Aguirre, 90, lives in Washington, DC. Over the years, the Aguirres entertained prominent Latin American political and business figures including heads of state from Nicaragua, Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Bolivia and others in the 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom, seven-bath estate. The home became known as the Blue House for the family’s 40-plus year tradition of adorning the exterior in thousands of blue lights during the holiday season. DC Design House Inc. is comprised of all volunteer corporate officers Skip Singleton, Sandy Steele, and Taylor Wells who work in concert with an all-volunteer Executive Committee including Susan Hayes Long (chair), Karen Beiley, Terry Castellani, Diana DellaVilla, Jenny DeSanto, Christina Emmerman, Christi Perez, Stephanie Robinson, Jean Seline, Kim Summerville, and Jill Watson. This year’s design advisors include Seline, Wells, Beiley, David Mitchell, Skip Sroka, Ann Lambeth and Nancy Colbert.

Boutiques will be set up on the lower level with a percentage of sale proceeds donated to Children’s National Medical Center. The Washington, DC Design House, a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity, began in 2008 as a unique design show house event for the DC Metro area in which top area designers showcased their talents into a “flowing design home” to raise funds for a local charity.
