Supporters of the DREAM Act to help educate illegal immigrants will be marching from downtown Silver Spring to downtown Wheaton on Aug. 5 to raise awareness and educate voters before the
The DREAM Act, , would qualify certain illegal immigrants for in-state tuition at Maryland community colleges.
Organizers say they are expecting more than 1,000 people at the Sunday afternoon march, most of them students. Kim Propeack of CASA de Maryland anticipates that it will be the largest student mobilization in recent Maryland history. CASA de Maryland has worked with student groups in Montgomery and Prince George's counties to plan the event.
The march will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Silver Spring at Ellsworth Drive between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue and end at 2424 Reedie Drive in Wheaton.
Wheaton will also be hosting the Sunday afternoon, and student marchers will go onstage at the festival to tell their stories.
More than 100 students marched in Baltimore to support the DREAM Act in July.
I am also confused as to what the so called '1%' has to do with anything in the article or what I said. I assume you are just another failure that is looking for a scapegoat to blame your problems on and the '1%' seems to be a popular target lately.
FACT: Actually, undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than they use in government resources. According to a study released by the National Council of La Raza, undocumented immigrant workers will pay, on average, about $80,000 more in taxes per capita than they use in government services, since they are ineligible for just about all of the social services the federal government provides other workers. Thus, even though undocumented workers--who typically work in low-wage, nonunion jobs--often find themselves living below the poverty line, they are barred from seeking assistance from programs like food stamps and Medicaid. As reported in El Diario de El Paso, the president's Council of Economic Advisers stated in 2007 that the "impact of undocumented immigration on public budgets is likely to be very positive." The comptroller for the state of Texas reported that in 2006, the undocumented accounted for about $424.7 million more in state revenues--including sales tax and property taxes--than they used in state services, including education and health care. In addition to sales and property taxes, an estimated three-quarters of undocumented workers also pay payroll taxes, because they are forced to use false Social Security numbers to obtain work.
FACT: According to many studies, immigration has an overall positive impact on the economy. For example, researchers have shown that an increase in immigrant workers tends to increase employment rates among native-born workers as well. According to a Pew Center study, between 2000 and 2004, "there was a positive correlation between the increase in the foreign-born population and the employment of native-born workers in 27 states and the District of Columbia." Former Immigration and Naturalization Service commissioner Doris Meissner pointed out: [I]mmigrants tend to be concentrated in high- and low-skilled occupations that complement--rather than compete with--jobs held by native workers. And the foreign-born workers who fill lower-paying jobs are typically first-hired/first-fired employees, allowing employers to expand and contract their workforces rapidly. As a result, immigrants experience higher employment than natives during booms--but they suffer higher job losses during downturns, including the current one. This isn't to say that immigrants aren't pitted against native-born workers. They are--this is why American business has always encouraged immigration, including immigration under conditions of illegality. This guarantees a pool of cheap and more easily controlled labor--because undocumented immigrants live under the threat of deportation.
"As reported in El Diario de El Paso" "impact of undocumented immigration on public budgets is likely to be very positive" These are just a few excerpts that literally made me laugh out loud. I am not sure that you can take these sources and automatically label them as fact. Did you get these cute Myth/Fact comedies from CASA de Maryland's website, I certainly wouldn't doubt it.
I immigrated here LEGALLY following the proper protocol in order to become a US Citizen. I am against the Dream Act that rewards law-breaking people who are here illegally in the first place.
