Automated Speed Cameras Placed at Wheaton Schools

Three new locations in Wheaton added to police's "Safe Speed" program.

Roads near three schools in the Wheaton area were named new speed camera locations, just in time for the first day of school.

Located at Randolph Road near Kennedy High School, Dennis Avenue at Sligo Middle School and Veirs Mill Road near St. Catherine Laboure Elementary School, the sites are among 25 new speed camera sites in Montgomery County, a majority located at or nearby schools. The new locations went into affect on Monday, the first day of school.

Cameras at the Wheaton sites are portable "Safe Speed" vans run by an automated monitoring system.

According to staff at the traffic division, cameras at the portable locations will be rotated each day through the new locations on two hour shifts.

The new cameras were announced last Tuesday at White Oak Middle School with a press conference attended by County Executive Isiah Leggett.

While tickets issued as part of the automated speed camera program don't add points against driver's license, breaking speeding laws near schools have steeper fines and additional consequences. Speeding in a school zone is a fine of $1000 and five points on a license, while passing a stopped school bus with its lights flashing is a $750 fine and three points on a license.

Blanca Kling, Hispanic liaison for the Montgomery County police department, said that the speed camera locations were chosen based on traffic data and community requests, not directly from the schools.
