Family Displaced by Valleywood Drive Fire

The fire caused approximately $75,000 of damage, but no injuries.

A fire yesterday afternoon at 12010 Valleywood Drive in Glenmont displaced three adults and three children, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

No one was injured, Assistant Chief Scott Graham said. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Fire and Rescue Service Spokesman Captain Oscar Garcia said that all occupants of the home had evacuated as firefighters were arriving.

The fire caused approximately $50,000 worth of damage to the structure of the single-family home and $25,000 worth of damage to the house's contents, Graham said.

"The homeowner was working on a piece of engine equipment in the basement when it fell over and landed on a can of brake cleaner," Graham said in a statement. A water heater pilot light ignited the brake cleaner's fumes, and the fire extended up the walls and into the first and second floors.

Firefighters also responded to a yesterday afternoon that damaged 20 apartments.
