VIDEO: Landover Man Arrested for Kidnappings and Robberies in Wheaton

Henry Levi Sanders, now in custody in connection with in the , was out on bond from a robbery charge when he was arrested Tuesday outside his home in Landover, Montgomery County Police said.

“It is frustrating,” Assistant Chief Russell Hamill said at a press conference this morning.

Sanders, 50, of the 3500 block of Brightseat Road in Landover, is being held in the Prince George’s County jail, Hamill said.

Sanders faces theft and robbery charges in Prince George’s County, Hamill said, as well as three counts each of armed carjacking, kidnapping and armed robbery in Montgomery County. It is not known which prosecution will happen first.

Sanders also faces a charge of first-degree assault from the third incident, which occurred at the parking lot in the Westfield Shopping Center on Nov. 27. Police said the victim, a 77-year-old man, was attacked with a box cutter and beaten about his face and head. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police from Montgomery County and Prince George's County together made what Hamill called an “uneventful arrest” on the strength of the existing theft warrant for Sanders, after surveillance footage and one of the many tips from the public led to a focus on Sanders as a suspect in the kidnappings and robberies. 

After the arrest, Montgomery County detectives obtained a search-and-seizure warrant from a district judge. They then seized evidence at Sanders’ home in Landover that police said links him to the crimes: a yellow box cutter and clothing that matched that suspect's clothing worn during the crimes.

Police are still processing forensic evidence from the car involved in the third incident at Westfield Shopping Center.

Hamill thanked the public for sending in tips, especially after of the suspect from Target.

The first two kidnappings and robberies occurred in the parking lot at the in the Westfield Shopping Center on Nov. 23 and Nov. 26. Police said the suspect forced his victims, a 75-year-old man and a 60-year-old man, to drive him to area ATMs to withdraw cash.
