If you have plans to be out at parties or bars in Montgomery County this weekend, be sure to have a designated sober driver.

The Montgomery County Police Department's blog warns drivers that three sobriety checkpoints will be set up this weekend.

Officers from Montgomery County, Rockville City, and Gaithersburg, along with Montgomery County Deputy Sheriffs and Maryland State Police Troopers, will work together to conduct the checkpoints in the county. The times, dates and locations of the checkpoints will not be disclosed in advance.

This enforcement is a component of the department’s continuing effort to curb impaired driving and underage drinking, the blog said. In 2013, Montgomery County police officers arrested over 3,300 people for driving under the influence.

Broadcasting this seems a little counter-productive, if not outright irresponsible. Surely we all need as many drunk drivers as possible taken off our roads and prosecuted. Warning them ahead of time might make streets safer over the weekend, but it only helps make streets less safe at all other times.

It also encroaches on the 4th Amendment, but has been allowed if times and dates are posted and a mathematical formula (every 3rd or 10th) cars is given.
