A student at the University of Baltimore posted to Reddit that a strange message had come from campus security on Friday the 13th.

A live bull was shot by Baltimore City police at 10:35 a.m. in the unit block of Preston Street, according to the message.

The steer escaped from a city slaughterhouse in West Baltimore, according to WNEW, which said residents and business owners contacted police after seeing the animal.

One person captured video of the animal trotting down the street. The video was shot on North Avenue near Linden, according to The Baltimore Sunwhich reported the steer was one of 20 that had arrived Friday morning at the George G. Ruppersberger & Sons Inc. slaughterhouse in the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.

The steer jumped a fence at the facility, and also jumped over a police car, an employee of the slaughterhouse told WBAL.

Police began following the animal on North Avenue and had almost corralled him near the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall when he went into a parking garage, then, as a police vehicle attempted to block the entrance, he jumped over its bumper, according to The Baltimore Sun.

A stream of police cars with no sirens followed the animal, which trotted around the city "as if it's a regular human crossing the cross walk," one woman, who spotted the steer on Mount Royal Terrace, said in an interview with WBAL.

Police reportedly said shooting the animal was necessary for public safety.

A witness told WJZ the bull "looked into the cop car" before an officer fired, then the animal began to limp before collapsing on his side.

There was no property damage as a result of the incident, ABC 2 News reported.

I don't eat meat either, but I do think that cattle raised in more humane situations than feed lots is better... and I do think if you're going to eat it you should understand what it means to kill ... Better yet, the animals should run free and meat-eaters should be required to hunt them without automatic weapons and digitalized view finders just like any other predator.

Man has a long way to go re: eating animals to satisfy palates.
