General Assembly Notes: Is Annapolis 'Clobbering' Montgomery County Taxpayers?

What's going on in Annapolis that affects Montgomery County?

'Tis the season, when dozens of legislators from Montgomery County file into Annapolis to create and pass (or shut down) a bevy of new laws that may or may not change our daily lives. The Maryland General Assembly convened Jan. 9, and it won't adjourn until April. Because you can't be there, keeping an eye on lawmakers from your town, we'll be rounding up some of their more important deeds each week.

Here's what our local legislators did recently:

Del. Heather Mizeur (D-Dist. 20) of Takoma Park, who everyone says is running for governor next year, is doing something that only a person interested in state office would do—leave her district to give a speech. She's talking to the Queen Anne's County Democratic Club next month about "major issues" in the legislature this year. (Star-Democrat)

If you aren't already speeding on the Intercounty Connector (the road made headlines last year for the plentiful violations police officers issued), you may soon be able to legally go up to 70 mph. A House bill co-sponsored by Del. Aruna Miller (D-Dist. 15), of Darnestown, would raise the maximum speed limit on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 to 70 mph and automatically increase the ICC's speed limit from 55 to 70. (Patch)

Sens. Richard Madaleno (D-Dist 18) of Kensington and Jamie Raskin (D-Dist 20) of Takoma Park, introduced a gender-identity nondiscrimation bill that would protect transgender people from housing, workplace and other forms of discrimination. (MetroWeekly)

So, he's not a state legislator, but County Councilman Philip M. Andrews (D-Dist 3) of Gaithersburg gave a scathing assessment of lawmakers in an op-ed written for the Washington Post. He said Montgomery County doesn't get back enough money from the state for our tax contributions; scoffs at the recent decision to make counties pay for a portion of teacher pensions, and says taxpayers were "robbed" by the Maryland Transportation Authority.

An excerpt:

Gov. Martin O’Malley and the General Assembly are clobbering Montgomery County. It’s time for the county’s leaders to push back hard...If Montgomery’s state senators and delegates don’t stand up for the county as a united delegation, Annapolis will continue to treat Montgomery’s taxpayers as doormats.

It's the Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) that Andrews is complaining about. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is an entirely different agency that runs the transit system for Baltimore and its suburbs, and the MARC trains, and commuter buses (not Metrobus, not Ride-On) that run on the ICC and also on I-270 and U.S. 29

Thanks for the catch, C.P. It's been corrected.

Thanks for the memories of our favorite park, Hershey Park in Hershey, PA. The old wooden rollerRead More coaster was also our very favorite. There was also another favorite, much tamer Love Boat ride that went through a dark tunnel and then went up an incline and you got wet at the end of the ride. Visiting the Hershey Chocolate Factory was also a must on our trip to Hershey. We grew up in nearby York, PA.

Oooh, that Love Boat ride sounds really fun! We didn't see that one. We definitely had quite anRead More experience there!

Going to Hershey Park had been a yearly event when we took our own three children to Hershey Park.Read More They loved it there, too. All three of our children are now married and have taken their children to Hershey Park. We have also been to Hershey, PA to the famous Hershey Car Show, where we purchased a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron convertible. I enjoyed reading your article.

Cori, you have no idea how much this helps. I just found out some of the details about the Geo BowlRead More and it sounds like a much better situation for my kiddo than I was originally imagining. I'm going to reach out to the team tonight. I imagine that they will be receptive to my worries. I'm hoping that all of the worst case scenarios are in my head and only in my head, which is probably likely. :) Maybe I'll see you at the Geo Bowl!

Priming is key. You can also show him video on similar bowls. Pretend at home with family afterRead More finding out more or less how it will go the day of event. Encourage and prime/prep. How wonderful that he has come so far!

Great tips! And actually, thank you very much for the reminder that he has come really far. You'reRead More so right. And I'm so proud of him!

Yes and yes to everything you say here. The reality of parenthood is simultaneously far far worseRead More and far far better than the fantasy could possibly be. The truth about living with multiple pairs of giant stinky man shoes should be enough to make most of us think twice about filling our houses with male offspring. And when did I sign up to help a hormonal 15 yr old write an impossible essay on a book he's not yet read, due in 3 days? It's lucky we love them so much is all I can say.
