Leisure World Post Office Listed For Possible Closure
Postal service to study thousands of retail locations for closure or consolidation
The U.S. Post Office at Leisure World in Silver Spring is among 3,700 across the country that are being reviewed for possible closure.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, in a statement released today, said that the U.S. Postal Service doesn't need as many retail locations as it once did, because more customers are conducting their postal business on-line, via smart phones, or at grocery, drug or other stores.
The Postal Service has nearly 32,000 retail offices nationwide. Of the 3,700 being reviewed for potential closure, over 40 are in Maryland.

“Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business,” Donahoe said.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, which are funded by sales of postage, products and services.
