Councilmember Roger Berliner (D-Dist 1) succeeds outgoing Council President Valerie Ervin. He said Montgomery County's work to regain fiscal stability is not yet done, and that the county will face budgetary, transportation and environmental challenges in the future.  


Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr is asking for $2.128 billion in school funding for fiscal year 2013, a 2 percent increase over the previous year. He said the increase in funds is necessary to handle MCPS's growing enrollment.

Councilmember Nancy Navarro (D-Dist 4) said that she’ll continue to push for county-funded youth programs as vice-president of the council. A pilot program in East Montgomery County began last year. Read more on Colesville Patch.


The driver of a taxi that crashed into the Chevy Chase Pavilion—an upscale Friendship Heights shopping center on the Maryland-DC border—was given a notice of infraction for causing the accident earlier this month. The taxi driver went through a red light, crashed into a car (which, in turn, crashed into two other cars), and then ended up on the front steps of the shopping center.
