#MoCo Online: Pedestrians Should Stay 'Street Smart'

Montgomery County looks to promote pedestrian safety.

Pedestrian safety has been a big issue in Montgomery County lately, with more than a dozen accidents involving pedestrians or bikes so far this year, Silver Spring Patch reported.

Montgomery County promoted on Facebook its participation this month in the pedestrian StreetSmart campaign.

For the last 13 years, StreetSmart has served as an annual public education, awareness and behavioral change campaign in the Washington, DC, suburban Maryland and northern Virginia areas.

The campaign looks to change both driver and passenger behavior with the goal of reducing pedestrian and bicyclist deaths and injuries. The campaign combines public service advertising with stepped-up enforcement activities to increase safety.

This is a joke, right? MOCO folks cross against the light - can't be bothered to wait - bikers bust stop signs and lights - crazy - but I forgot, they are so entitled...

I see bikes at night, WITHOUT headlights and tail lights, often also illegally traveling AGAINST traffic! Most bicyclists seem to think traffic signals " do not apply to them" as they frequently run stop signs/traffic lights!- Pedestrians often walk in the roadway, with their BACK to oncoming traffic-do they have a "Death Wish"??

Nice job, Cook and Robert. A+ trolling today, guys. Maybe spend less time making idiotic comments and more time reading about the program? Goals: -Educating drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists about safe usage of roadways. -Increasing enforcement of pedestrian and bicycle traffic safety laws – and make drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists aware of enforcement. -Building on awareness of pedestrian/bicycle traffic safety issues that have been established in prior campaigns in order to change behaviors. -Developing a program that can be easily replicated by other localities that want to decrease pedestrian and bicycle injuries and fatalities.
