Montgomery County Firefighters Fill the Boot

The annual campaign to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by soliciting roadside donations has been a sticking point for those seeking to pass anti-panhandling legislation.

Friday is the last day for the "Fill the Boot" drive, as Montgomery County firefighters collect donations at street corners throughout the county, including the intersection of Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue in Glenmont, outside Fire Station 18.

The firefighters began their annual campaign on Wednesday to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Read more about the history of "Fill the Boot" and how much money has been raised for the MDA on the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services blog.

Members of the MCFRS "A" Shift raised more than $45,000 on Wednesday, according to an MCFRS Facebook post.

The "Fill the Boot" campaign has played a Montgomery County legislators in the Maryland General Assembly have introduced bills in the past to curb the practice, but MCFRS has opposed any such ban, saying it would drastically reduce their ability to raise money for the charity.
