Osama Bin Laden Killed in Firefight, Metro D.C. Reacts
WMATA says heightened security starting today.
Metro riders were already dealing with the effects of increased security this morning, several hours after President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a firefight in Pakistan.
bin Laden, the author of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, was found and killed in a compound in Abbotabad, Pakistan, outside of Islamabad.
Twitter user Freshyill tweeted this morning: "Just saw two Metro Police officers on the platform at Silver Spring."

Other Wheaton-based riders said they didn't see any additional security on their ride.
Metro announced , and the State Department issued a world-wide alert for Americans traveling abroad, expiring August 1.

On a call with reporters late yesterday evening, senior administration officials said that there was no knowledge of a specific threat in reprisal for bin Laden's death.
Maryland officials reacted to the president's annoucement with a mix of congratulations and reflection.
"This closes a sad and tragic chapter in our country and our world’s history," Gov. Martin O'Malley said in a statement, " I commend the men and women of our Armed Forces and the dedicated public servants of our nation’s security agencies. This should be a day of reflection and prayer for a more peaceful future.”
Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski also shared their thoughts, WTOP reported.
