Posting 'Revenge Porn' Online Could Become a Felony in Maryland

A cyber civil rights group and a woman humiliated when an ex-boyfriend posted her intimate photos and videos on Facebook have worked with a Maryland lawmaker to propose making such actions a crime.

Holly Jacobs says she is hopeful Maryland will soon pass a law that would make the non-consensual release of explicit images a felony, reports WTOP. New Jersey is the only state where posting revenge porn is a felony.

Maryland Delegate Jon Cardin has introduced a bill that would make it a felony to intentionally disclose in a public way, on the Internet or otherwise, sexually explicit images of a person without that person's permission, the station reports.

The law would carry a penalty of up to five years in prison, or a $25,000 fine, or both.

Jacobs changed her name after her former boyfriend posted her photos in 2009, WTOP says. While criminal charges against the man were dropped by Hillsborough County, FL, prosecutors, Jacobs is pursuing a civil lawsuit against the ex-boyfriend.
