Van Hollen, Leggett and WMATA Interim General Manager Sarles on Hand For Glenmont Garage Groundbreaking

Garage is first in a series of construction projects near the Georgia Ave. and Randolph Road intersection.

Congressman Chris Van Hollen, County Executive Isiah Leggett, Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Nancy Floreen, as well as WMATA Interim General Manager Richard Sarles spoke today at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the on the west side of Georgia Avenue.

“This garage is needed by the residents of Glenmont, Olney and frankly, Howard County,” Floreen said in her remarks.

Leggett thanked MCDOT director Arthur Holmes and community members in Glenmont for their time and input, and stressed that the garage would help ease congestion south on Georgia Avenue.

Van Hollen spoke briefly before the group dug gold-painted shovels into a pile of dirt on the construction site - the current kiss-and-ride on the west side of the street. The congressman had secured a $500,000 earmark towards the purchase of two additional Ride-on buses that will increase the frequency of trips from the Norbeck Road Park and Ride lot to the the Glenmont Metro. 

"I am proud of the fact that the Federal government has been a good partner with Metro and the county and the state in that effort," Van Hollen said, "I will continue to work with my colleagues in the regional delegation to make sure that federal commitment remains."
