Westfield Says Nothing Has Changed

Westfield Wheaton says that debate over community benefits agreements in Montgomery County has not affected its Costco construction plans. But members of the Montgomery County Council say differently.

Although the Gazette and the Washington Post have reported that has stopped work on its Costco construction project in Wheaton, Westfield spokesperson Sidney Woods told Patch that this is not the case.

"Nothing's changed from our perspective," Woods said. He added that Westfield continues preparing the site and plans to begin construction soon.

However, Montgomery County councilmembers Nancy Floreen (D-At large) and George Leventhal (D-At large) both said that Westfield had told them that construction was on hold, the Gazette reported.

The council is holding a public hearing Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Rockville to discuss community benefits agreements for big-box stores moving into the county.

Patch is compiling demolition photos so that Wheaton residents can track construction of the new Costco as it occurs.
