A Different Summer of Lunch: Kennedy, Local Schools Offer Drop-in Meals for Kids

In additional to registered summer programs, MCPS offers free, nutritious meals for students until August 19.

During the school year, 32 percent of MCPS students qualify to get a free or reduced price breakfast and lunch, but when school lets our for the summer, so do those meals.

The school system already offers meals as part of summer academic programs, but through August 19, six schools, including will offer free, drop-in lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Summer Food Service Program is funded with federal dollars and will be open to any child, 18 or younger. Last year, between scheduled sites and drop-in meals, MCPS served more than 285,000 meals.

In addition to Kennedy, the other free walk-in sites are Rolling Terrace Elementary School in Takoma Park, Summit Hall Elementary School in Gaithersburg, Argyle Middle School in Silver Spring, Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville and Millian Memorial UMC, a church in Rockville.
