Hurricane Doesn't Stop New School Year From Coming At Most Montgomery County Schools

Seven county schools, still without power, didn't re-open on schedule

Hurricane Irene didn't stop the new school year from starting as scheduled Monday at most Montgomery County Public Schools, including Glenallan Elementary School and others serving Wheaton.

All 200 schools in the system -- except for seven that remained without power in the aftermath of Irene's strong winds and rain -- opened as scheduled Monday, the first day of the 2011-12 school year.

The seven county schools that didn't open because they had no power Monday morning were:

  • Bradley Hills Elementary
  • Chevy Chase Elementary School
  • Francis Scott Key Middle School
  • Harmony Hills Elementary School
  • Highlands View Elementary School
  • Piney Branch Elementary School
  • Woodlin Elementary School

Some schools also remained closed Monday in the District of Columbia, and in Prince George's and other surrounding counties.

MCPS is the largest public school system in Maryland, serving over 144,000 students. It is the 16th largest system in the country, and serves students from 164 countries speaking 184 languages.
